Rodriguez, Tigers hold off Mariners

Baseball Betting Lines

07/04/2008 - Seattle, WA (Baseball Betting) - Ivan Rodriguez knocked in three runs and Justin Verlander hurled six effective innings, as the Detroit Tigers topped the Seattle Mariners, 8-4, in the opener of a four-game set.

Matt Joyce had four hits, including a pair of doubles, and an RBI, while Mike Hollimon finished 2-for-4 with his first career home run.

Verlander (5-9) surrendered two runs on eight hits and three walks to earn the win for Detroit, which snapped a two-game slide after rattling off six straight wins. Fernando Rodney threw one pitch in the ninth to record his first save of the season.

Jose Lopez was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Jose Vidro and Adrian Beltre added RBI hits for Seattle, which had a two-game win streak halted. Mariners starter Carlos Silva (4-10) was tagged for five runs on nine hits in five innings to take the loss.

Curtis Granderson sliced a triple to the gap in left-center leading off the fifth, with the score knotted at two runs apiece. He then broke for home on contact when Carlos Guillen bounced one to second, sliding safely past catcher Jeff Clement.

Guillen, who was safe at first on the fielder's choice, moved to second on a Miguel Cabrera single and came around to slide in safely on another play at the plate, following a Joyce single through the right side. Gary Sheffield then singled back up the middle, scoring Cabrera for a 5-2 Tigers advantage.

"It was a good win," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "We were able to get some runs and help out Verlander, but I was happy with the way we played tonight."

The Tigers extended their lead when Mark Lowe entered for the struggling Silva in the sixth. Hollimon greeted Lowe by taking his second pitch out to right- center for his first career home run.

Detroit loaded the bases with two out in the ninth off Roy Corcoran, and Rodriguez delivered two insurance runs with a single down the first base line.

Seattle mounted a charge in the ninth against Todd Jones, getting a leadoff single from Lopez. Raul Ibanez followed with a double into the right field corner, while Vidro plated a run with a groundout, and Beltre drove in another with a single to right.

Jones battled, getting Willie Bloomquist to ground into a force out, but then issued a walk to Richie Sexson. Leyland called for Rodney, and Clement went after the first pitch, popping out to shallow left field to end the rally and the game.

"I think you lose a little adrenaline when you come in and you're up by four," Leyland said of Jones' performance. "Hopefully he'll have a save situation again tomorrow so he can throw again."

Seattle took an early lead with a run in the first. Ichiro Suzuki singled through the right side to start the game and moved to third with an errant throw on a pickoff attempt by Verlander. Lopez followed by slapping an RBI single to left.

Detroit tied things up in the third on three consecutive one-out singles from Hollimon, Granderson and Placido Polanco, the last of which plated a run.

Seattle regained the lead in the bottom half. Lopez doubled leading off and scored on Vidro's slow roller up the third base line two batters later.

Detroit followed suit by tying it in the fourth. Joyce ripped a one-out double to right and scored on a line single to center off the bat of Rodriguez.
